NEWS FROM THE GRAPEVINE

 

The Community History Project has finally found a home.    Jane Beecroft reports that her telephone will be up and operating on Thursday, February 7.  It will be the same number as before the move, 416-515-7546.  Jane will report in the next newsletter the address and other details.

 

 National Flag Day for Canada, Feb. 15th, marks the day in 1965 when our Red and White Maple Leaf Flag was first raised over Parliament Hill.

 

 

UPCOMING EVENTS

Wed. Feb. 6th at 7:30.-  The Weston Historical Society is having Terry Murray to speak on “Faces on Places” at the Westminister United Church Hall, 69 Williams Street, Weston.  This will assist you in delving into the fascinating world of Gargoyles!

 

Monday Feb. 11th at 7pm at St. Lawrence Hall. 3rd floor -  As part of the Toronto Public Library “One Book” reading series, a panel discussion will be based on Michael Redhill’s award winning book, “Consolation”.  The panel will include exMayor Barbara Hall; developer Brad Lamb; Spacing Magazine Editor Matthew Blackett; Toronto Star critic Christopher Hume, and moderated by Matt Gallaway.  The event is free and open to the public.

 

Sat. Feb. 16 & Sun. Feb. 17 - 1 to 3pm, Mackenzie House, 82 Bond St. is having a walking tour called “In the Footsteps of the Black Victorian”.  Discover Black History in Toronto by walking through parts of Old York where African-Canadians carved a community through struggle and triumph.  This tour starts and ends at Mackenzie House.  Please RSVP in case of inclement weather. Wed. Feb 20 at 8pm The Toronto Branch of the UEL is having Dorothy Duncan speak on “Loyalists at Table – Food, Fellowship and Folklore”, at 40 Scollard Ave. Suite 300, between Yonge and Bay, 2 blocks north of Bloor.  For info 416-489-1783.

 

Thursday, Feb. 28th from 9 to 5pm, at the Toronto City Hall Rotunda.  THA and 16 of their member organizations will be holding the Annual heritage Showcase.  Come and see the displays of our members.  For info   416-967-6432

 

Wednesday, March 5, 7:30The Gov, Simcoe Branch of the UEL will be having Lisette Mallet speak on “Le Sentier Partage – The Shared Path: A Historical Path Project Along the Humber River”.  At St. David’s Anglican Church, 49 Donlands Ave. at the Danforth.  Info www.uelgovsimcoe.org
