NEWS FROM THE GRAPEVINE

Notice of Postponement – The Riverdale Historical Society announces that the unveiling of a Heritage Toronto Plaque on the Music Hall, scheduled for February 23rd has been postponed for a year.  We regret any convenience.

Community Heritage project has a new home, thanks to the Bank of Nova Scotia in donating the use of the second floor of their bank at the southwest corner of Queen and Church.  It was a last-minute rescue which came into being two weeks after CHP had been moving its files and books into temporary storage space arranged by a member of the Gooderham family.  It will take until the end of April at least to get everything together and organized in the new quarters.  Battles with Rogers resulted in CHP going back to Ma Bell, and the telephone promised with its original number – will be hooked up on the 19th February.    Jane Beecroft

The Banting homestead is finally safe!  The Town of New Tecumseh passed the designating bylaw which was upheld by the CRB after a hearing.  The Town proceeded to raise funds to buy the entire estate and purchased it from the OHS for $600,000 ( $40,000 less than their original offer!)  The local MP is campaigning for National Historic Site designation – en route to World Heritage Site designation (which tourists and the general public have already assigned it.)  The Town will convert the property to a museum with the help of the Banting family.                Jane Beecroft
