THA’S 3rd ANNUAL WORKSHOP

This is THA’s 3rd Free Workshop for Members, and we have planned a program on topics designed to be both interesting and informative to all members.

 

-An Advocacy Panel will discuss Successful Strategies,

Panelists include David Stonehouse, Director of site development at the Brickworks, and former Senior Planner with the City.

Stephen  Otto, the current Chair and Founder of the Friends of Fort York.

Mark Warrack, Chair of Heritage Toronto’s Conservation Committee and Heritage Co-ordinator with the City of Mississauga.

 

- A representative of THA’s Insurance Company will be on hand to explain the coverage for THA’s Members events.

- And finally Andrew Peck our WEB Manager, will discuss sending Newsletters by Email and how to provide a link to THA’s Website.

 

Tea, Coffee and cookies will be served.

Thurs, Oct 23 at 7:30- The Etobicoke Historical Society. Speaker Dr. Robert Roden on `Castles and Great Houses of England & Scotland`. Bob`s wonderful slide show have been the highlights of many past meetings, and tonight he will share his pictures and thoughts of the 38 castles and mansions he and his wife, Sue visited.  Free admission. Homemade Christmas Pudding made by food expert and author Dorothy Duncan may be ordered at The TOLLKEEPER’S COTTAGE any Saturday up to Nov. 29th. A small Pudding which serves 2-3 people costs $7. A medium size which serves 5-6 people costs $15. The Puddings must be picked up at the Tollkeeper’s Cottage on Sat. Dec.13 between 10am to 5pm. The Tollkeeper’s Cottage is on the NW corner of Davenport and Bathurst St.

 

Sat. Oct 25 from 10am to 5pm.- Apples and Pumpkin sale at the Tollkeeper’s Cottage NW corner of Davenport & Bathurst Sts. Sale of heritage apples(such as Snows, Tolman Sweetam Russets, Spys etc.) fresh from Siloam Orchards, and pumpkins for pie-making or Jack-O-Lantern carving with seeds for roasting, heritage recipes using apples and pumpkins and some cookbooks including both of Dorothy Duncan’s superb books – freeinformation and apple bobbing for children if it is not too cold outside – volunteer bakers will also have their specialties available.

Monday, October 27th, 7:30  at the Carlu, 444 Yonge Street, 7th floor (at Yonge and College), The 34th Annual Heritage Toronto Awards and 12th Annual William Kilbourn Memorial Lecture.   During the evening’s festivities, Mr. John Campbell, CEO, Waterfront Toronto will deliver the William Kilbourn Memorial Lecture, “A Shore Thing: The Future of Toronto’s Waterfront”.  Tickets: members and Heritage partners - $25.00, General Admission $30:00, Groups of 10 $250.00.   Special pre-event Mayor’s reception - $100.00 [limited tickets available, includes admission to awards & lecture, complimentary food & bar].  All proceeds support Heritage Toronto.  Advance tickets 416-338-1338.

Monday, Nov. 3rd, 5:00 to 7:00pm at the Miller Tavern(previously the Jolly Miller), 3885 Yonge St. The Miller Tavern are hosting a fund raising event for the North York Historical Society.  The theme is the Forties. Admission is $20.00 each, covers food and 3 beverages.

 

Mon. Nov.3 at 12:30 to 2:00 to Unveiling of a “Monument to the War of 1812 The artist Douglas Coupland and Deputy Mayor Joe Pantalone will do the Unveiling. The sculpture will be unveiled in front of the Malibu at the Harbourfront Condominiums on the NW corner of Bathurst and Fleet Sts.  A reception follows.

 

Wed, Nov. 5 at 5:00- The Gov. Simcoe UEL will have Dinah Cruse-Hunter speaking on “Colonel David Bridgford” at St. David’s Anglican Church 49 Donlands Ave at the Danforth.  

 

Sunday, Nov.9th from 2 -6pm Fort York will launch the book “HTO: Toronto’s Water from Lake Iroquois to Lost Rivers to Low-flow Toilets” Thirty contributors examine the ever-changing interplay between nature and culture, and call into question the city’s past, present and future engagement with water.  Also featuring a guided walk in relation to Garrison Creek and Toronto’s original waterfront. Cost $5.00 (or free with purchase of book).

 

Tues. Nov 11th at 10:45 the Remembrance Day Service at the first military cemetery, Strachan Avenue Burying Ground west of Fort York. After the ceremony refreshments and cookies will be served inside the fort.  Free admission. To get the Burying Grounds by car, enter by Fort York Blvd.

 

Wed. Nov. 12th, 7:30- The North York Historical Society will have a meeting with Richard Gerrard, Registrar, Museum Services, Culture, City of Toronto speaking on “Simcoe Stuff, the search for the origins and fate of a family’s possessions.”  The meeting will be held at the Willowdale United Church, friendship Room, 349 Kenneth Avenue, North York (east of Yonge and Church) Parking available.

 

Sat. Nov. 15 at 1:00pm to 4:00pm – The Toronto Branch of the UEL

is running their 3rd annual Genealogy Workshop. Sun. Nov.23 from 1:00 to 4:00pm the Ontario Historical Society in partnership with the Culinary Historiams of Ontario will present their annual Cookbook Caper at the historic JohnMcKenzie House. Peruse and buy new and used cookbooks and enjoy tea and baked goods in the parlor. Free admission.
