THA’S 3rd ANNUAL WORKSHOP

This is THA’s 3rd Free Workshop for Members, and we have planned a program on topics designed to be both interesting and informative to all members.

 

The Workshop includes a Panel discussion entitled, “Successful Advocacy Strategies”. Joining us to discuss their greatest successes will be, David Stonehouse, Director of Site Development at the Brickworks and a former Senior Planner with the City; Stephen Otto, The Current Chair and Founder of the Friends of Fort York; and Mark Warrack, Chair of Heritage Toronto’s Conservation Committee and a Heritage Co-ordinator with the City of Mississauga. As well as outlining what made their strategies successful they will address some of the pitfalls they have encountered and provide some advice for the volunteer heritage community in our advocacy efforts.    

 

- A representative of THA’s Insurance Company will be on hand to explain how the coverage for THA’s Members events.

- And finally Andrew Peck our WEB Manager, will discuss sending Newsletters by Email and how to provide a link to THA’s Website.

 

Tea, Coffee and cookies will be served.

Mon. Nov.3 at 12:30 to 2:00 to Unveiling of a “Monument to the War of 1812 The artist Douglas Coupland and Deputy Mayor Joe Pantalone will do the Unveiling. The sculpture will be unveiled in front of the Malibu at the Harbourfront Condominiums on the NW corner of Bathurst and Fleet Sts.  A reception follows.

 

Wed, Nov. 5 at 5:00- The Gov. Simcoe UEL will have Dinah Cruse-Hunter speaking on “Colonel David Bridgford” at St. David’s Anglican Church 49 Donlands Ave at the Danforth. 

 

Sunday, Nov.9th from 2 -6pm Fort York will launch the book “HTO: Toronto’s Water from Lake Iroquois to Lost Rivers to Low-flow Toilets” Thirty contributors examine the ever-changing interplay between nature and culture, and call into question the city’s past, present and future engagement with water.  Also featuring a guided walk in relation to Garrison Creek and Toronto’s original waterfront. Cost $5.00 (or free with purchase of book).

 

Sunday, Nov.9 at 12noon, Heritage Toronto & Riverdale Historical Society will unveil a plaque to commemorate St. Matthew’s Anglican Church. Guests are welcomed by St. Matthew’s to attend the 10:30am worship service prior to presentation. 135 First Ave. (near Gerrard Street East and Broadview Ave.)

 

Tues. Nov 11th at 10:45 the Remembrance Day Service at the first military cemetery, Strachan Avenue Burying Ground west of Fort York. After the ceremony refreshments and cookies will be served inside the fort.  Free admission. To get the Burying Grounds by car, enter by Fort York Blvd.

 

Wed. Nov. 12th, 7:30- The North York Historical Society will have a meeting with Richard Gerrard, Registrar, Museum Services, Culture, City of Toronto speaking on “Simcoe Stuff, the search for the origins and fate of a family’s possessions.”  The meeting will be held at the Willowdale United Church, friendship Room, 349 Kenneth Avenue, North York (east of Yonge and Church) Parking available.

 

Sat. Nov. 15 at 1:00pm to 4:00pm – The Toronto Branch of the UEL

is running their 3rd annual Genealogy Workshop. From Dec.4 to Dec.22nd, The ninth annual exhibit of “Creches from across the World” at St. James’Cathedral Parish Hall.  The opening will be on Thurs. Dec 4th from 5:00pm to 8:00pm, and continue to be open to the public every day from 1:00 to 4:00 until Dec. 22, and will re-open for teo days on Sun. & Mon. Dec. 28th and 29th.  St. James’ Cathedral Parish Hall is situated at 65 Church St. at the corner of Adelaide.  Entrance by donation. Sun. Nov.23 from 1:00 to 4:00pm the Ontario Historical Society in partnership with the Culinary Historiams of Ontario will present their annual Cookbook Caper at the historic JohnMcKenzie House. Peruse and buy new and used cookbooks and enjoy tea and baked goods in the parlor. Free admission. Thurs. Nov. 27th at 7:30, the Etobicoke Historical Society at their monthly meeting will have Ron Fletcher speak on “The Humber: Tales of a Canadian Heritage River”.
