ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

which is being held Saturday, May 30th at 1:30,   at the Toll-keeper’s Cottage.

  There will be a short AGM, an afternoon tea, and then interesting speakers.  Jane Beecroft will speak on the Davenport Road and Rolande  Smith, Societe d’histoire de Toronto, will speak on the French Regime in Toronto.

To get to the Toll-Keepers Cottage by TTC, Take the Bloor Subway to the Bathurst Station. Then take the bus north and get off at Davenport.

Coming from the north, take the University Line, get off at St. Clair and then take the Bathurst bus south and get off at the Davenport corner.

If you are driving, drive up or down on Bathurst to Davenport.  The Cottage is on the North-west corner. Parking is along Davenport, west of the Cottage.

CAUTION- Take care walking from sidewalk to the Cottage.

 

MEMBER’S UPCOMING EVENTS

 

The York Pioneers & Historical SocietySunday April 26th at 2pm. Will have book and magazine launch of the 2009 issue of The York Pioneer and then a special book to commemorate Toronto’s 175 anniversary – Chris Rable’s “From Hands Now Striving to be Free: an inventory of boxes crafted by 1837 Rebellion prisoners.”  The Meeting will be at the John McKenzie House, 14 Parkview Avenue, Willowdale.

 

Riverdale Historical Society – Tuesday, April 28 at 6:00 – Will have their President and noted Riverdale Historian, Gerald Whyte, give a talk on The History of Riverdale. He will also introduce the RHS book project.  Event to be held at Riverdale Public Library, 370 Broadview Ave. at Gerrard.  Admission free to members - $4 for non-members.

 

O’Connor Irish Heritage House – On May 3m 2pm to 5pm-  The 5th Anniversary Celtic Family Spring Sunday held at the resplendent Le Royal Meridien King Edward Hotel, 37 King St. East.  Entertainment by the “The West Enders” Ceile Family, dancing with favourite “Reel Irish Dancer”, Maureen Mulvey-O’Leary. The Gov. Simcoe Loyalist Br. Of the UEL – Wed. May 6 at 7:30 – The May meeting of the Simcoe Loyalists will have Tim Compeau as their speaker, who will talk on “ Facing the Invincible Frenzy: A New England Loyalist and the Ties of Family”  The meeting will be at St. David’s Anglican Church, 49 Donlands Ave at the Danforth.

 

The North York Historical Society – On Wednesday, May 13th at 7:30 they will have as their speaker Rob Leverty, Executive Director, The Ontario Historical Society, whose topic will be Ontario Cemeteries “The Struggle for the Public Interest”.  The meeting will be held at Willowdale United Church, Friendship Room, 348 Kenneth Avenue, North York (east of Yonge and Church).  Parking available.

 

The York Pioneers & Historical Society – Tuesday May 19 at 6pm – The YPHS will have their Annual Dinner at the Arts & Letters Club, 14 Elm Street.  Award winning author  Karolyn Smardz-Frost will speak about her research for “I’ve Got a Home in Glory Land”.  This book won the 2008 Governor-General’s award for non-fiction.  A great dinner, wine, entertaining speaker, silent auction and a beautiful venue. Toronto Chapter Ontario Archaeological Society-Thursday May 21 at 7:30pm will have as their speaker John Steckley, who will tell “How I spent my summer vacation: Finding the St. Lawrence Iroquoians and Ben Kingsley.”  The talk will be at Room 246, 19 Russell Street, University of Toronto.

 

10th Annual Doors Open – May 23-24- Many events throughout Toronto -  The Toll-Keeper’s Cottage, Scadding House will be two of them. www.ca/doorsopen

 

Friends of Fort York Annual Georgian Mess Dinner – Thursday, June 11.  The dinner is a fundraising event of the Friends in support of the Fort York Drums. Dress for the occasion is Period Costumes, Military uniforms, Masquerade Costumes (as worn in 1813!) Black Tie (miniatures and decorations may be worn).
